Weekly Roundup

Last week saw Katy only attended school on Thursday and Friday after catching my cold over the weekend.  In our under the weather state, we did discover a little place called Barefoot Books, located at our end of the Summertown shopping district.

Now Barefoot is an interesting place. It is an independent publisher who specialise in carefully crafted children's books, CDs, games, puzzles and other gifts. At the heart of everything they do are their core values: imagine, explore, create, connect and give back. However it's much more than a bookshop. Barefoot Books offers storytime, craft, face painting, yoga, ballet, dancing, sing-along, various antenatal workshops plus various one off workshop sessions for both adults and children. It also has a cafe!

Katy and I turned up for the story time at 10.30am. I enjoyed a hot chocolate while Katy listened to several books being read. We also noticed on their calendar that at 4pm on Monday's was Breeze's Barefoot Dance Session for 4+yrs. So later that day once we'd picked up Ella we made our way back there.

Breeze was a lovely young lady who ran a very informal dance session. Apparently one little girl had requested scottish dancing however since she didn't turn up, Breeze decided on some Indian dancing! After 30 minutes, our girls had mostly mastered a bollywood routine! They both really enjoyed the session so I can see us going back again.

Andy gave a lecture at Liverpool University/ National Oceanography Centre on Wednesday which meant he was away the whole day, spending most of this time on the train.

Thursday was an exciting day for Ella who has a class assembly in the morning followed by a pyjama party in the afternoon. Recently, Ella has been following in Andy's insomnia footsteps, despite being in bed by 7- 7.30pm and being visibly exhausted, she often doesn't fall asleep until 9pm. This has also resulted in us spending chunks of time helping her get to sleep by patting or just sitting on her bed. It's quite a frustrating process as she just can't seem to lie still long enough to drift off.

Anyway my point to this story is that on emerging from the classroom, I asked Ella how the pj party was. She replied 'It was fun but I didn't win anything.' After quizzing her, it was revealed that they played several games one of which was called 'Sleeping Lions' with the aim to see who could lie still for the longest. Yep you guessed, Ella was first out! We both had a giggle over this.

There was much anticipation on Friday as it was Forest School for the Starling and Robin classes. For this term (5 weeks), each class spends half the day exploring, playing and learning in a nature reserve. We were advised to pack wellingtons plus a change of clothes for Ella. However with the recent sunny weather there was no mud to be seen - a disappointment for Ella! She may get her opportunity this week as wet weather is forecast for the end of the week.

A last minute decision on Friday night enabled us to test out one of our local restaurants - Mamma Mia an Italian pizza/pasta place. It was very busy and we were lucky to get a table. Pizza was good and the ice cream even better!
