New Recreation

What happens when you send your daughter to their cousins rock climbing birthday party? Apart from having an awesome time climbing the indoor walls, as the party concluded a silks come and try it session began!

The 5 girls stayed for another 45 mins playing and learning tricks on the silks! The instructor then mentioned she was offering a beginners class on Sunday afternoons....Ella, Mia and Isabel all signed up!!

Perfectly there are three silks and three of them! During each session, they work hard both with their brains and body copying the expert moves of Lauren, their lovely teacher. Over the term new locks and positions have been learnt all building towards compilation of their own routine.

Polar Opposites

With Andy away for work, Grandad came over to join us for a few days! He got to watch the girls do Little Athletics, Ella play cricket and silks while Katy rock climbed and finally both participate in the West Bix Tryathlon at the AIS as well as attend the Lifeline Book fair! Kept him busy as per the norm!

Like the girls, Grandad enjoyed the Bookfair managing to pick up several books on orchids. Ella scored herself a book on Birds, while Katy found an old series of the Magic Treehouse. Numerous people spotted our photo in the Canberra Times the following week!

Sunday was hot... good weather for the Tryathlon. Both girls found buddies on the day which made the race more enjoyable for them. As the 50m pool was closed due to maintenance the swam took place in the 'secret' pool (the athletes 50m pool) but as seating was much more restrictive, we didn't bother going in opting to wait at the transition area.

The younger ages competed first, so Katy was first to emerge with her friend Mila. On entry to the transition area, Mila temporarily lost her bike and Katy was trying to help although she didn't know where it was to begin with so not really helping but providing some support! We watched them return from the bike and just made it to the finish to see them cross the line!

Ella and Aoife had to wait around a little longer before their age group started. They kept themselves entertained exploring the Weet Bix arena. When the girls exited the transition on their bikes, there was much confusion as the organisers hadn't expected the new age group to be coming through! Again it was a race to the finish line between the girls and the mums. Am happy to say we are still faster at this stage!!

While sweating in the hot sunny conditions at the tryathlon, we received a few messages from Andy who was enjoying the cold snowy weather at Mt Hood Meadows ski resort in Oregon. On realising his meeting was in Portland in February, Andy and a fellow colleague decided to go skiing for the weekend! They stayed at Mt Hood Tiny Village in a tiny house known as Lincoln! All was very cosy with 4 people in this 24m2 house! However no-one was complaining as it was cheap, clean and a short drive from the ski fields.

Towards the end of the tryathlon, we heard from various sources that Ella had won a prize! We learnt after being directed to speak to various officials, that it was a Funkita kit which would arrive in the post! Ella was pretty happy with that!

Back at home, we recovered from the morning effort. Grandad began to gather his things before we ventured off to Ella's silks class. Grandad watched in amazement as she twisted and twirled wrapping herself up in the silk performing all sorts of tricks. Meanwhile Katy rock climbed, still enjoying the single rope the most.

It was a quick turn around at home before farewelling Grandad on his flight back to Perth.

Slackline Progress

Ella has made significant improvements in traversing her slackline that she was given for Christmas. Here are a few snippets from the past few months.

The 2018 School Year Begins!

First day of the school year began with a coffee where we met Aoife in her new school uniform!

Ella is in Year 5 with Liz (yes the Year 5/6 students call their teacher by their first name!). Mostly happy with her new teacher but disappointed that Aoife wasn't in her class!

Katy is in Year 3 with Miss Kite. She is ecstatic to get Miss Kite, plus have her best buddy Mira in her class and to be in the new portable - it has 2 air conditioners!!

Kianinny Revisited

With memories still fresh from their fantastic time on Year 4 camp, Max and Ella were eager to return to Kianinny plus it was only a stones throw away from On the Perch.

We found a spot for a picnic lunch by the pond before undertaking the Wombat Holes mini golf course. What an awesome and interesting course! Puts most mini golf courses I've done to shame! Thought the wombat hole shortcuts for younger players was a brilliant idea.

Once the 18 holes were completed it was back to the pond for some free canoeing! Lots of laps, lots of swapping canoeing partners and a few canoe rescues! A really enjoyable way to finish the afternoon at Kianinny.

All hot and bothered, we returned to our deluxe cabin, grabbed our swimmers and walked to the beach. The waves were great for body surfing and Ella managed to catch her first wave without a board!

The next morning, after packing up we ventured back to the beach once again for our final dip and body surfing session! Our summer holidays had come to an end and the new school year was just around the corner.

Exploring Inland

On the way into Tathra, we spotted the bird park, On the Perch and Ella was immediately desperate to visit. An opportunity to spend a few hours arose and we arrived at the bird park mid morning.

We were kept busy with the 6 exhibits including 4 walk in aviaries, and over 80 birds to view. An interesting and informative talk on Bush Stone-curlews was given by the owner. Ella spent her time taking lots of photos with the Satin Bower bird her favourite. Katy meanwhile enjoyed feeding and patting the chickens in the the chicken run!
