A(nother) Soccerless Weekend

Once again, the weather played havoc for our weekend soccer with the both games being cancelled for the girls due to a waterlogged pitch. Training for the past 2 weeks also has been affected. So what does one do on a soccerless weekend?

Our oldest daughter enjoyed the opportunity to stay in bed and read as much as possible.

Our youngest decided to join Pippa and myself for a run - up to the horse paddocks (stopping to visit the horses) then continuing around the back of the houses before detouring through the centre of the suburb home. This was again repeated on Sunday morning too! What fun!!

Raining Goals - UPDATED

Last weekend at soccer it was raining goals from our girls. Katy pocketed 3 goals which goes to show how much her confidence has grown. Ella meanwhile finally found the net, scoring her first ever goal and was very proud. Unfortunately no footage of these momentous occasions was obtained.

Luckily for us, one of the Lorikeet's mum forwarded these photos of Katy to us from the game....

Katy's Back to Nature 7th Birthday Party

We approached this party with trepidation, as our memories from Ella's 7th birthday which was also celebrated in the Himalayan Cedars was still fresh in our minds. In case you missed Ella's party write up it began like this....

Luckily for Katy, the weather gods shone down and to be quite honest I don't think we could have had a more perfect day.

The meeting point for the party was halfway down Bindubi Street which borders Aranda Bushland Nature Reserve. Once all the party guests arrived, their first job was to make their own trail mix from a selection of dried fruit, pretzels and lollies.

Then each nature hiker was given their own satchel, which as described in the previous post, contained a nature journal, pen, water bottle, magnifying glass and their own trail mix goody bag. We were all ready to go!

The gang of 10 kids plus Katy and Ella, headed off down the bike path together with a group of adults - Nana and Grandpa, three mums and myself. While we were heading to our first destination in the Aranda Snowgums, Andy did a car shuffle and walked back to meet us.

Most of the kids were excited and energy levels were running high. Some were a little nervous perhaps unsure of this whole walking adventure and others were a little shy taking time to warm up. Climbing through the access gate (which was locked) into Aranda Bushlands we ventured. Obviously it was a very new adventure into unknown waters for one little person who on seeing the locked gate asked it we were allowed to go into here!!

Skirting around the bottom of Aranda Hill, we detoured down a small bush corridor providing access through leased land into the snow gums. We explore this small area finding eggs and tiny caterpillars on leaves, doing leaf rubbings and spotting the difference between the three gum tree species all the while nibbling on our trail mix.

Continuing on to the snow gums and frost hollow, we spot the resident mob of kangaroos and identify several birds and we crunch over some frost too! On our way, we find many of the items listed on our scavenger hunt.

Into the Cork Oaks, we wander choosing a peaceful spot to enjoy fruit and more of our trail mix. Here we pause to play What's the time Mr Wolf and Snake games.

We can't stop for long though as we still need to make it to the Himalayan Cedars where Andy was busy cooking some snags for our lunch. Beginning the final stage of our walk we spot several gorgeous red toadstools...which starts much chatter about fairy houses and fairies living in this forest...

To keep the girls laughing we start to do a variety of animal walks - frogs, emus, dogs..Here are a few of the koalas!!

The Himalayan Cedar forest is in sight as we emerge from the Coak Oaks. It is a short but steep section with amazing views over Black Mountain and Lake Burley Griffin. We enter this old cedar forest in search of our final scavenger item - a Himalayan Cedar pine cone. It doesn't take too long to spot them. Briefly we pause to check out a stick hut before arriving at the BBQ area where Andy is ready to serve us lunch.

...and then on to the final activity of the day - birthday cake! It was a sensational day and an awesome party.

 Our garden model!!

One happy girl ready for a Party!!

Party Preparations

Katy decided on a Back to Nature party to celebrate her 7th birthday. Luckily our slow decision worked in our favour. We scheduled the party for Monday 13th June, a public holiday, rather that the weekend before which saw the East coast get hammered with rain, winds and flooding!

The Back to Nature party evolved into a small (2km) point to point bush walk, with games and activities on the way followed by snags and cake at the final destination. Brainstorming began with ideas flowing....calico tote bags, nature journals, birdseed and seed packets as part of party bag.

And so we got busy!

The little calico over shoulder bags turned out to be simple with the longest part involving the cutting.

The bird seed cookie cutter hanging ornaments on the other hand needed several attempts before we perfected them. We found that the gelatine based ones kept falling apart so we did an anzac type baked recipe using flour, golden syrup and butter! Perfecto!

Travelling

Grandad and Nana ventured over to the UK for 3 weeks.. The trip saw Grandad return for the first time back to the UK since leaving 66 years ago, when he travelled as a 6 year old, via boat to Australia by himself. They loved the trip with all the sightseeing, visiting Dad's cousin and catching up with friends.

Meanwhile one of Andy's American colleagues came and stayed with us for a few days. Steve walked up to the top of Mt Painter with the girls, Pippa and Andy to enjoy the views of Lake Burley Griffin, Black Mountain and the Brindabellas.

Then we have numerous friends doing some fantastic trips escaping the Canberra winter - a swim trek around the Greek Islands, European tour (London, Paris, catching the tour, Switzerland mounting races), Family holiday to Bali, Central Australia explorations all of which is making us feel very jealous....so much so that we've just booked flights to Perth and Japan for Christmas and January!!

Look Who is 7!!

The day finally arrived for Katy who has been looking forward to her birthday since Ella's! Being a school day with after school care was a little rough but that's the way it rolled this year.

We woke early enough for Katy to open her presents - a bean bag from Ella, a desk lamp from Pippa and a bike WITH gears from us. She was one happy girl!

There was enough time to test ride the bike with a quick lesson on using the brakes!

A surprise early pick up from after school care (with a bunch of roses too) followed by her current favourite dinner - baked salmon with flourless chocolate cake :)
