Pink Lake and the Kalbarri Cliffs

Andy and I rose for a sunrise run along the shores of Pink Lake. Turns out that Pink Lake is not very pink at this time of the day! It looked pinker on our drive out. We learnt that the pinkness of Pink Lake is due to the presence of carotenoid-producing algae. In fact this algae is a natural source of beta-carotene which is harvested at Pink Lake and found in many food beverages, health supplements and baby formula.

It was a short drive to Kalbarri our next destination. Kalbarri is situated on the mouth of the Murchison River. It has spectacular cliffs to the south and rugged impressive inland gorges to the east.

On our way in we took time to explore the cliffs. We stopped at Island Stack and Natural Bridge and then did a loop walk of Rainbow Valley and Mushroom Rock followed by a pause at Red Bluff lookout.

Lunch was had on a rock shelf overlooking Red Bluff Beach before we continued on to the caravan park where we would be based for the next two nights. There were 2 tawny frogmouths in the tree above our campsite!
