Heading into the interior to explore the gorges of Cape Range National Park involved a 40 min drive (good to charge our battery) back around and through Exmouth and then some. Views on the way in were spectacular and we had great expectations.
Notes on access to Charles Knife gorge indicates the last section is only 4WD. No problem for us in Bec. We followed in a couple of 2WD interested in how they would go. Turns out this 4WD only section was rather overrated.
The Thomas Carter Lookout where our 6km hike began had views over the plateau which were much less impressive. The 7km hike took us through mostly low scrubland, traversing several small gullies (not gorges). The sun was shinning and we were warming up in the midday sun. A few stops were necessary in order to lift the girls spirits (as neither wanted to come on a stupid hike) before we finally reached Shotgun Gorge.
The views from the lookout over this massive gorge were impressive and beautiful. Keen to get back to Exmouth for a late lunch, we hung around long enough to take a few photos before returning to the car via the flatter and shorter part of the trail that was straight across the plateau.
Back in Exmouth, we lounged at the bakery eating and accessing our limited reception via our Telstra dongle. In between different family members taking turns, we visited various shops to make necessary (ad unnecessary) purchases.
Returning to our campsite, we headed down to the beach for a sunset swim to cool off. It was glorious.
