Blossoms and Peewees

The chosen winter sport for 2015 is soccer with both girls opting to take a break from minkey. The season started at the beginning of May at the Hawker Playing fields.

Ella was placed in an under 8/9 girls team known at the Blossoms. The majority of the girls had participated  in soccer previously with several playing in the same team last year. The Blossoms have two wonderful coaches and in typical Canberra fashion, it turns out that Andy went to primary school with one of them!! Training is at the ovals adjacent to Aranda Primary School on a Thursday afternoon from 4.15 - 5pm with their first session taking place the week prior to the first game. This was really helpful for Ella to pick up skills and rules about soccer and gave her a chance to make new friends.

The Blossoms first game was against the Bluebells. The Blossoms were a little out of their depths against this team which was made up of mostly 9 year olds who had played together last year. Nevertheless they did manage to score a few and have fun at the same time. Ella was a little hesitant at first but soon got into it and was rewarded at the end of the game by receiving the first encouragement certificate of the season! Well done Ella!

Katy joined the Peewees - the under 5 and 6's children. After watching half of Ella's game, Katy and I headed down to the field where the Peewee were to play. However something was amiss, as by 10.55 there wasn't a single sole to be seen and after a few texts to Andy, we realised we were a week early!! So the following week we once again trudged down the footpath to the Peewees field and were greeted by lots of children and parents. There were many familiar faces in the crowd.

The Peewees were divided into the under 5's and the under 6's and then divided into little groups of 4 or 5. Katy was very nervous wrapping herself nicely around my leg and producing a few tears. As it became obvious as to what was happening, she eased herself into the mini game with her team mates and was soon chasing the ball around with all the others too!  The peewees are definitely like bees to a honey pot! The Peewees season began slightly different to the normal routine, with mini games first and then a variety of drills. At the completion of the session, each child received a soccer ball to play with at home and bring along to future Saturday games! Katy was pretty happy with that!
