Maison Carree

We regrouped at the apartment for lunch, to get warm again and recover before our afternoon expedition. Wandering the narrow streets of the old town, we arrived at the Maison Carree, the square house that's actually rectangular!!

This roman temple was originally dedicated to the Emperor's protective spirit and the goddess Roma, but then rededicated to Gaius and Lucius Cesear. It is an imposing building sitting atop a 2.8m platform. Climbing the 15 steps to the portico, one feels so small beneath the 33m tall corinthian columns!

Inside the cella, the inner room, we enjoyed watching Nemausus - the Birth of Nimes. This short film took us back in time narrating the founding of Nimes. A great watch. On the way back, we stop to fill our tummies once again - this time with crepes and waffles! Yum!
