More Roman Ruins in Nimes

Our morning walking tour to discover more of Nimes' Roman treasures, took us past Porte Auguste. It is one of the two remaining gates from the ancient city walls.

A short distance from the Maison Carree, we discover this waterway, the centre piece of a wide boulevard and know that we are going in the right direction for the Jardin de la Fontaine. This large garden consists of two parts - a classic 17th century garden and a landscaped mediterranean hillside. Constructed at the site of a natural spring, the classic garden has many symmetrical canals centred around the nymphaeum, which the pigeons thought was a great spot to rest!

Tuck into one corner of the park stood the ruins of the Temple of Diana, whose purpose remains a mystery. Despite this we are still impressed by the architecture of this well preserved little site.

From the Temple of Diana, we ascend a small path, one of many that crisscross this hillside. It seems Sunday morning is the time for running up and down and around and around the paths! Standing at the top of Mont Cavalier is the Tour Magne. This tower initially was 18 metres tall however Augustus doubled its height and incorporated it into the city walls, thus making a structure that was both prestigious and strategic. Climbing the 140 steps, we were treated to a great view over Nimes.

Back in town, we quickly picked up our bags from the apartment, devoured another delicious warm crepe and waffle before wandering past the historic arena for the last time. We had time to play gladiator fights on the playground before boarding the train back to Grenoble. We had a lovely time in Nimes and would highly recommend visiting if you are in the area!
